Wat Ton Bo (Wiang Tha Kan archaeological site)

Wat Ton Bo

Ton Bo temple was named from a big Bo tree which had been grown in this area. Its name also refers to the lore that King Manglai of the Lanna dynasty ordered his servants to grow the Bo tree from Langka there. The Fine Arts Department excavated and restored this temple in 1989 CE

on bo temple consists of the rectangular base of stupa, the rectangular Vihara and two unknown buildings. The Vihara turned to the east. Although, the Fine Arts Department could find its wall trace, they still assumed that it was a hall which was surrounded by low walls. Next, the rectangular building number 1 which turned to the east, was surrounded by low walls. There were two laterite boundary makers in the east, so it probably was the Uposatha hall. The last one was a rectangular building number 2 which turned to the north

The Fine Arts Department found many parts of architectures and sculptures, artifacts which made of baked clay and metal such as earthenwares, decorated earthenwares, decorated stuccos, iron tools, bronze tools as bronze handles and bronze bells, clay Buddha statues, the base of bronze Buddha statue. Most of sculptures were Hariphunchai and Lanna style. Ton Bo temple had been existed between 19-22 century BE.
