Wat Pa Pi Rok (Wiang Tha Kan archaeological site)

Wat Phapairuawk is the name called in posterior since there was a lot of bamboos (Pairuawk) growing up in the area of this temple. It is one of 30 abandoned temples found in the area of Wiang Thakan. This temple outside the Wiang (city) in the west near the corner of the city/ city wall It is quite large in scale. The front of the temple faces to the east There were evidences of the ruins of the ancient remain which was bricked with plastering in the area of the temple, total 12 places. The pagoda and temple which their upper part was built on the same base as appearing construction superimposed 2 ages. These are deemed as the main construction of the temple. The walkway was laid by bricks linking to Khong gate, the front wall of the temple in the East), surrounded by ruins of the foundation of the building, total 10 places. Some was constructed as a group of 3 buildings having walkway linking to each other but most of them were built as the single building with unclear purpose of use since there was no enough evidence to analyze. The assumption to them is they might be the temple for placing the important Buddha image, hall of fripitaka, and pavilion But there is no the hall of temple since there is no the evidence of the marking slab often stuck around the building. The edge of the wall is in square shape, Size 55x82 m. and currently there is the road across at the southwest corner.

The evidence as the major antique was found by digging in this temple in year 2000. Besides materials accompanying with architecture such as brick. stuoco, metal frame of tiered umbrella, roof tile made of baked clay. Jango (gold sheet), nail, and remains of the earthen ware from kiln in the age of Haripunchai and Lanna in various kinds, etc.. There is the evidence of Phra Phaeng 500 (votive tablet), mold of the Buddha image made of baked clay in Haripunchai style presenting the trace of dwelling of people in the community continuing from Haripunchai age until Lanna age. Even the evidence of construction found presently presenting the Lanna Style but the evidence of repairing or additional construction in the area of temple in the posterior is always found from the trace of collapse or digging for archaeological purpose since it was from degeneration of the construction materials or flowing into of the cultural approach of the new generation of Buddhist as appeared evidence in the historical record in different periods. Totally, in case of Wiang Thakan, there is evidence of Mahayana Buddhism in the age of Haripunchal (Buddhist era 13-28) from the favor in making the Buddha image or the votive tablet having many Buddha images contained in the same mold or even in Lanna age (Buddhist era 19-21) there is the evidence of Buddhism in Mahayana found as Langawong style in the in the initial period and Singhol or new Langka in posterior

Therefore, determining the age of this temple is deduced that it may be in the end of the Haripunchai age to Lanna age during the Buddhist era 18-21
