This year, the Chiang Mai Municipality, in collaboration with its network partners, aims to preserve local traditions and elevate the festival to a world-class level. This year is particularly special as it marks the 730th anniversary of Chiang Mai, a crucial aspect of soft power in attracting tourists to Thailand.
The event features a variety of interesting activities, including:
- A procession of the Phra Phuttha Sihing and other important Buddha images of Chiang Mai.
- The Chiang Mai Songkran Prince and Princess Contest.
- Traditional Lanna activities such as offering wooden poles to the Sal tree and carrying sand to temples.
- Contemporary cultural activities such as retro-style folk dance performances and outdoor film screenings.
- Creative Songkran water splashing activities throughout the city, especially the World Songkran Thaphae Chiangmai 2026 event on Thaphae Road, which will feature a large water tunnel to welcome tourists in a grand display.
